Project Overview by Gensler
Storytelling is a powerful method to showcase sustainable design. Reclaimed wood can tell a compelling story of a material's journey and past use, and was used for the Gensler designed AMCOL International Corporate Headquarters, a new LEED Silver 72,000 square feet, two-story office and laboratory building in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. The atrium space showcases AMCOL's innovative laboratory processes that transform raw bentonite material into several consumer products such as cosmetics, water absorptive materials, and plastics. Gensler used reclaimed teak for the monumental stair in the atrium and in the ceiling which connected the workspace and laboratory to the training and conference center. In this space, Gensler chose a sculptural bench from San Juan Ventures and located it between the meeting rooms for a break out area where all guests and employees of the facility can enjoy, marvel, and tell the story of AMCOL's commitment to environmental stewardship.
